Basic is a group of high-level programming languages known for their user-friendly design. Initially developed in 1964 at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, USA, Dartmouth Basic aimed to provide computer access to non-science students by simplifying custom software creation which traditionally was in the domain of scientists and mathematicians.

The language variants later gained popularity on microcomputers in the late '70s and '80s when it was commonly integrated into the machine's firmware. Despite modern modifications and languages like Microsoft Visual Basic inspired by it, Basic remains in use. Notably, by 2006 about 59% of developers using the .Net Framework opted for Visual Basic .Net as their primary programming language.

In the pre-1960s era when computers were costly and used for specialized tasks under batch processing systems, users lacked direct interaction with the machines. However, with the advent of more affordable and faster computers during the '60s with time-sharing capabilities allowing multiple users or processes simultaneous utilization of CPU and memory, user-computer interaction became a focus of research leading to the development of tools like programming languages and command line interpreters by the '60s and '70s.
